 How Flexr helps employees access loans and salary advances — when they need it most

Project overview

Flexr (formerly named RopePay) is a loan and salary advance management platform that empowers companies to offer financial support to their employees. By bridging the gap between salary cycles and emergency financial needs, Flexr ensures employees can access the funds without tedious processes, while also giving employers control and transparency over disbursements. 

Flexr aimed to simplify financial support in the workplace by allowing employees to:

  • Apply for loans or salary advances directly through a mobile app.

  • Get funds quickly without paperwork or complex verification.

  • Repay automatically via salary deductions managed by their employers.

At the same time, companies needed an easy way to manage loan limits, approvals, and repayments without administrative burdens.

My Role & Team:
I worked as a product designer, in collaboration with:

  • Another Product Designer

  • One Product Manager

  • Two Frontend Engineers

  • One Mobile Developer

  • One Backend Engineer

  • One Product Manager Intern

The platform was inspired by the stakeholders’ goal to make accessing loans as fast and frictionless as possible—targeting a user experience where loan applications could be completed in five seconds or less.

The Problem

Most employees live paycheck to paycheck and struggle to get quick, affordable funds in emergencies. Companies want to offer salary advances as a benefit, but have no simple, low-risk way to do it without heavy admin or exposure.

Identified Challenges

For Employees:

  1. Difficulty accessing quick, reliable loans or advances before payday.

  2. Complicated loan application processes with slow approvals.

  3. Need for flexible repayment options, emergency funds services, and salary advance features.

For Employers:

  1. No easy system to offer structured financial benefits (loans/advances) to staff.

  2. Lack of centralized loan tracking and management for large teams.

Opportunity

 Immediate access to salary advances and loans.

A company-backed structure to manage risk and repayment.

An easy-to-use platform for both employees and employers.

Research and Discovery

Our research focused on understanding the goals of employees seeking financial support, as well as the operational realities faced by HR and payroll managers.

Problem Framing

We crafted problem statements grounded in user goals:

  • For Employees: "I need to access funds quickly without disrupting my workflow or worrying about repayment complexity."

  • For Employers: "I need to manage employee loans securely, flexibly, and with minimal admin work."

This helped focus every design decision around supporting user motivations, not just delivering features.

Approach:

We followed a Goal-Directed Design (GDD) approach throughout the project, staying anchored on what users needed to achieve at every interaction point, rather than focusing purely on isolated features.

Competitive Analysis:

We studied platforms like: **images of competitors

  • Earnipay

  • Lidya

  • Fairmoney (B2B partnerships)

  • Traditional HR/Payroll Systems (to understand gaps)

Our competitive review informed Flexr’s emphasis on speed, transparency, and ease of integration.

Key Insights
  • Employees wanted loans or salary advances quickly without tedious paperwork.

  • Employers needed control over how much employees could borrow (via loan caps).

  • A clear repayment system (direct salary deduction) was necessary to build trust across all parties.

This research shaped Flexr's core flows and feature set.

Information Architecture & Flow Mapping

Built a simple and logical structure:

  • For Employees: Home → Eligibility → Loan Calculator → Apply → Track Loan.

  • For Admins: Dashboard → Manage Employees → Set Caps → Approve Loans → View Reports.

User flows are prioritized to minimize taps and mental load, especially for employees under financial stress.

Designing the Flexr Experience

Employee Journey:

We crafted an intuitive process where employees could:

  • Instantly check loan eligibility.

  • Calculate repayment terms using a built-in loan calculator.

  • Apply for a loan or salary advance with minimal input.

  • Track loan status and repayment history.

  • Enable automatic salary deductions for stress-free repayment.
